Best Restaurants in Altus, OK: The Top 10 Spots Locals and TDY Visitors Like
Updated: 4 hours ago
Somewhere around week two of an Altus TDY, the DFAC and the frozen pizza both stop doing it for you. Altus isn't a big city, but it has a solid lineup of local spots that classmates keep going back to: plenty of Tex-Mex, a real steakhouse, good pho and sushi, and a few breakfast places worth getting up early for. If you're on an Altus TDY, here's where to eat.
Here are ten that locals and visiting aircrew keep recommending. We picked them based on recent public reviews and listings. Restaurants change hours, menus and sometimes ownership, so check hours before you go (several places on this list close early or skip a day). Price ranges are rough guides based on reviews: $ = cheap eats, $$ = moderate, $$$ = a splurge.
1. The Plaza
Cuisine: Tex-Mex | Price: $$ | 2512 N Main St
Why it's worth it: The Plaza is one of the most-reviewed restaurants in town, and it's a go-to for a group dinner after a long week. Reviewers keep mentioning generous portions, quick chip and salsa refills, and friendly service.
Standouts and tips: Reviewers rave about the charro and ranchero beans and the Plaza Especial combo plate. If you like heat, ask for the salsa verde.
2. Taqueria Hernandez
Cuisine: Mexican | Price: $ | 101 N Hudson St
Why it's worth it: It's a small, no-frills spot with a big local following for authentic, made-fresh Mexican food. What it lacks in dining room space, it makes up for in flavor.
Standouts and tips: Reviewers single out the rice, enchilada plates, chile relleno and fajitas. It's often busy at lunch. Listings show it closed on weekends, so plan a weekday visit.
3. Fred's Steakhouse & Saloon
Cuisine: Steaks and Southern comfort food | Price: $–$$ | 2011 N Main St
Why it's worth it: It's hearty food at prices reviewers describe as some of the best in town, with portions big enough that a to-go box is a given.
Standouts and tips: Chicken fried steak is the headliner. Reviewers also like the catfish, fried okra, fajitas and chips with white queso. Bring your appetite.
4. Combo Noodles
Cuisine: Asian (pho, noodle and rice dishes) | Price: $ | 314 E Broadway St
Why it's worth it: Combo Noodles is one of the highest-rated places in Altus. Food is made fresh to order, portions are generous and prices are reasonable. One former student said it's the one place they still crave after leaving Altus.
Standouts and tips: Try the pho, crab rangoons, combo mee cha and a mango shake on a hot day. The spice scale runs mild, so go up a level if you like heat. Seating is limited.
5. Sakura
Cuisine: Japanese (sushi and hibachi) | Price: $$–$$$ | 212 E Broadway St
Why it's worth it: It's the local pick for sushi and hibachi, and a popular spot for celebrations like a checkride win or a class dinner.
Standouts and tips: Hibachi is cooked in front of you, so it's a fun group outing. Reviews are mostly positive, but a few mention inconsistent service or takeout. Dine in if you can.
6. Aloha Grill
Cuisine: Hawaiian plates, poke and burgers | Price: $–$$ | 1314 N Main St
Why it's worth it: It's something different from the Tex-Mex lineup: big plates over rice, quick and fresh.
Standouts and tips: Spam musubi, (spicy) teriyaki chicken, ahi tuna poke bowls and dynamite shrimp, with mango iced tea on the side. Reviewers mention a military discount, so ask.
7. Araceli's Restaurant
Cuisine: Breakfast and lunch (American and Mexican) | Price: $ | 401 E Broadway St
Why it's worth it: It's a family-owned breakfast favorite, and one reviewer specifically found it while training at the base. Expect big portions, generous coffee refills and fast, friendly service.
Standouts and tips: Omelets (the Spanish omelette gets shout-outs), huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, chile verde, and the green salsa. Listings show breakfast and lunch only, Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays.
8. Friendship Inn Restaurant
Cuisine: Family diner, breakfast all day | Price: $ | 1800 N Main St
Why it's worth it: It's a classic home-cooked diner that's open early and late, which counts for a lot when your schedule includes early shows and late sims.
Standouts and tips: Breakfast is served all day, so pancakes at 9 p.m. after a night sortie are fair game. The restaurant posts schedule changes on its social media.
9. Heavy Haulers BBQ
Cuisine: Barbecue | Price: $$ | 800 Falcon Rd
Why it's worth it: It's a highly rated local BBQ spot. Recent reviews praise tender brisket, ribs and potato salad, along with friendly service.
Standouts and tips: Listings show weekday lunch hours only, so it's a great mid-day stop on an academic day. Go early, since good BBQ tends to sell out.
10. Just Brew It
Cuisine: Coffee shop and café | Price: $ | 106 W Cypress St
Why it's worth it: It's a cozy downtown coffee shop with a 4.9 rating across 158 reviews on one aggregator. It's a good place to study with a coffee, or to grab a lunch that isn't fried.
Standouts and tips: Chai, specialty coffee, smoothies, the turkey avocado sandwich, tomato bisque with jalapeño grilled cheese, and homemade fudge. They also sell coffee beans you can have ground on the spot. Listings show it closes mid-afternoon and is closed Sundays.
A Few Others Worth Knowing
HTeaO opened at 312 E Tamarack Rd in July 2026 for iced tea runs (per a QSR Magazine announcement).
7 Brew announced plans in April 2026 to open a drive-thru beverage stand at 108 Sequoyah Lane. Check whether it's open yet.
Eating Well on a Long Altus TDY
Eating out is one of the best ways to get out of your study rut and spend time with your class. Eating out every night, though, gets old (and expensive) fast. A lot of students strike a balance: cook at home most nights and save Friday for a group dinner at one of the spots above.
At OffBase Crashpads, that balance is easy. Our houses have fire-pit dining out back for those nights you'd rather grill and hang out with your housemates. And they're all under three minutes from the Altus AFB front gate, so lunch back at the house is a real option too.
